The rainy season in Accra Ghana, provides much-needed relief from the heat but can also present difficulties for homeowners. Proper planning is critical for protecting your property and providing a safe and comfortable living environment. Here are some pointers to help you prepare your home for the rainy season:
  • Check and Clean Gutters and Drains
Make sure your gutters and drains are clear of debris and clogs. During heavy rains, this prevents water from overflowing and damaging your roof and foundation.
  • Inspect Your Roof
  • Examine your roof for signs of damage or leaks. To prevent water from entering your home, repair any loose or missing shingles.

  • Waterproof Exterior Walls
To prevent water infiltration, consider applying a waterproof sealant to your exterior walls. This keeps your walls dry and prevents structural damage.
  • Elevate Electrical Appliances
Elevate electrical appliances like washing machines and refrigerators if you live in a flood-prone area to reduce the risk of water damage.
  • Trim Overhanging Trees
Trim overhanging branches and trees near your home to keep them from falling during high winds and storms.
  • Seal Windows and Doors
Examine the area around windows and doors for any gaps or cracks. To prevent rainwater from entering your home, seal them with weatherstripping or caulk.
  •  Invest in Quality Doormats
Install sturdy doormats at entryways to keep mud and water out. This eliminates tripping hazards and keeps your floors clean.
  • Have a Backup Power Source
During heavy rains, power outages are common. Consider purchasing a backup power source, such as a generator, to ensure you have power during an emergency.
  • Create Proper Drainage
If your property is prone to flooding, consider installing French drains or creating proper drainage channels to direct water away from your home.
  • Store Emergency Supplies
Prepare for the unexpected by stockpiling emergency supplies such as flashlights, batteries, bottled water, and nonperishable food items.   Taking these preventative measures ensures that your home is resilient and ready to withstand the challenges of Accra’s rainy season.
